Lighting plays a significant role in reshaping the complex urban environment of Stamford , Connecticut in the conceptual design for Mill River Park . The transformation of a historic river running through the city will promote new connections between: a dense metropolis and natural habitats; fast-growing downtown and old residential neighborhoods; the past and present; and diverse inhabitants.

Lighting promotes different activities in a multiplicity of nighttime environments, while addressing concern for security and perceptions of safety. Multi-use pathway lighting encourages appropriate recreational use; illuminated bridges sponsor linkage; and dynamic integration of light into a skating rink creates an enticing attraction.
