The Ames Hotel

An award-winning adaptive reuse project transformed the historic Ames Office Building into a four-star boutique hotel. Designed by Boston’s Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge and built in 1889, the Ames building is a Romanesque/Byzantine-inspired masonry building and Boston’s first skyscraper.  A complete interior renovation paid homage to the building’s 19th century character while historic elements of the building, including the lobby’s tile vaulted ceiling, the interior stairway and the building exterior, were fully restored to their original splendor. The lighting program celebrates the building’s unique character, including Romanesque arched windows and vaulted mosaic ceiling, while evoking modern luxury, sophistication and convenience.
